Multiple Bands for ONE gig (show)

I am assuming that an upgrade path is critical to a new release....thoughts?

Hi - it certainly would be for me as I have almost 75 artists/bands already in the database. I have also done some work on the layout, so would need to save the html files.

I'm thinking that maybe a patch - like the ones provided by Virtuemart - might be an option for those upgrading (possibly with some SQL commands if new tables etc are required), whereas new users could just download the new version.

I guess the answer is the simpler, the better.

Thanks for your efforts to add this much needed function.

I'm trying to set up a page for concert news (on different venues for different bands and of course with multiple bands per gig) etc...

I was glad to find this component, so I installed it

But then I saw this "only one band" thing, what meant to me, that gigCal is complete worthless for me.

Now I'm happy to see, that my problem is already adressed here.

So I have some things to say about:

I have some concerts with far more than 4 bands and I wouldn't call this a festival. E.g. a show with 5-6 bands, mostly playing under 30 minutes. And this isn't an exception, it's the standard.

But why differ between Festival and multiple Band gigs?

85 Bands per Gig/Festival would be enough for me. But I think, there are a couple of festivals with more than 85. Okay, the difference between a gig and a festival could be, that a festival has a title like "Wacken Open Air" or so (Sometimes a Tour of some Bands also has a title..). So it could make sense to differ, but I wouldn't limit a gig to a count of under 5-6 bands...

To the discussion on starting times: Sometimes I even don't know the open doors or starting time of the whole event, so this should be optional. And in 99% of all gigs the exactly starting times of each band are unknown. On real festivals you have in 80% the starting times.

I have no idea, what the extension to multiple gigs looks like...

I could imagine 2 different types of entering multiple bands:

a)
1 drop down menue for the first band and dann a "add next band" link, which opens a new drop down. And so on.... (But I think, this would be very uncomfortable to manage... (to much mouse interaction.. )

b)
No drop down. Only type all bands, seperated by comma or plus or something else (but keep in mind, that some bands might have a comma in their names...) and the extension connects the typed artists directly with the database, if available.

For me it's unnecessary to have artists with profiles.



And final:
Up to now, if have no gigs scheduled, so it's no problem for me, if this feature would change the database.
I would be very pleased, if I could get a pre-version of the actual developement version

AFAIK, there are no festivals using gigCalendar. If you have a site specifically for a festival, you usually need to create a specific page layout for the schedule due to multiple stages, days, etc.

I think its more important to try and focus the intended user of this feature to bands, venues, promoters, booking agents and local music zines. I know many rock clubs that use the format of 6-10 bands a night with the 30 min sets as etid777 describes. Limiting the number of bands per gig isn't in our forecast as tritone has already explained the availability of 85 bands per gig in his current conceptualization.

Feedback so far has suggested that having a single start time for the entire gig would work for our users. Additionally, a confident upgrade path has gotten votes. Keep the feedback coming but I think this is a fairly clear consensus for the development to begin.

I think there is no need to differ between a festival or a concert, regarding 85 bands per event. So if the festival would run over more than one day, you could make 2 events out of it *g*

I can't imagine, that festivals using this tool, but perhaps someone else wants to build a great concert database with concerts and festivals. But I think, that workaround described above would be okay.

I'm in favour of a drop-down with multiple select and then have the ability to re-order, in a list perhaps. The solution used in the withdrawn version actually worked well for me.

I just need to show the date once, followed by the acts performing on that date and the start time of the gig in a simple module listing.

When you click on the band-name in the module listing, you get the full band profile. When you click on the date, you get the venue details, gig details and a list of bands (would be nice to have a short description too) - again live linked to the full profiles.

I wish I could fix this myself but I just don't have enough confidence with php.

Trouble is - I'm getting flack from the club committee as the members are used to seeing one date and three bands. They get so stuck in their ways it can be very frustrating.

Anyway, hope that gives some ideas and would love to know when you think this might be solved.

I am starting to work on the multi-band feature for 1.0.3. I'm estimating between two and four weeks. I'll be needing some knowledgeable testers. Check back soon...

I'm back.  Sorry for the very long delay. I went on my honeymoon, got super involved with union/management issues with my orchestra. Now I have a bit more time, I'll return to gigcal.

Needless to say, I overestimated my coding ability. I'm not going to give a time table.

For those of you that absolutely must have multiple bands NOW, the display of the same is already implemented in the daily builds. Use phpMyAdmin to set the gigband field to a comma delineated string of the the band's IDs. For example: 22,23,24 and the multiple bands will display in all modes.
